Kodi is not working ? 7 ways to fix Kodi common problems & errors

Kodi is a digital accessory for your computers, mobile phones and TV devices. Even though Kodi has a solid source code, just like any other tool, it may run into errors from time to time. If Kodi is not working for you, you would like to get it fixed. Sometimes, when I want to watch a movie and I can’t get Kodi running, things get frustrating. That’s why I decided I should compile a list of solutions to help you get Kodi working again.

Below are the basic troubleshooting methods that are known to fix most Kodi problems. Whether Kodi is crashing, acting erratically, slowing down, or simply not launching, you can get the problem taken care of by following one of the solutions in this guide. However, if you happen to run into any specific issue, I encourage you to let us know through the comments section so that I may try and find a solution for you.

Reader’s Deal: You can get 3-months free on ExpressVPN with a one-year plan, which accounts for 49% discount compared to monthly plan. It comes with a 30-day money back guarantee. If you are not satisfied with the performance, you can ask for a full refund.

Please also note that some issues are server related and cannot be fixed at your end. For instance, if a movie addon is not fetching any playable links, it means the servers that host the movie are unresponsive. You will need to wait for the servers to be running again or use another addon that uses different servers. This guide covers the issues concerning Kodi on your device.

7 Ways to Fix Kodi is Not Working

Here I am adding the most common actions to perform when Kodi is not working on your device. I am covering that worked for me when Kodi was not working. These are all tested and one or more of them will fix your problem. If you still face any issues after the below actions, let us know in the comment section below.

1. Reboot the Device

The first thing any technician tells you when you reach out to them for troubleshooting is to reboot the device. Rebooting seems like an oversimplified solution to any problem, but you will be surprised to know how many problems it can actually solve.

If your Kodi is not working, I highly recommend try rebooting the device on which you are using it. Rebooting will refresh the entire platform, the operating system and the installed apps including Kodi. If you are using on your mobile device, follow the usual rebooting process. If you are using Kodi on FireStick, go to Settings from the home screen and click Device. Next, click Restart to reboot the device. In case you are a computer user, restart your computer by clicking the reboot/restart option.

For the most part rebooting will take care of the Kodi issues. However, if this doesn’t fix the problem, I have more solutions for you.

2. Uninstall and Reinstall Kodi

Sometimes when Kodi is not working, you cannot fix the issue with a simple reboot. You need something more. I have noticed that uninstalling Kodi and then reinstalling it usually takes care of the problem.  That’s because you start with a clean slate with no addons, plugins or potential bugs.

Yes, when you reinstall Kodi all your existing Kodi data is cleared out. You will lose all your installed addons and builds. If you want to retain some of the Kodi data, you may use tools like Supreme Builds Wizard or Ares Wizard to back up the data. These tools may not recover everything but they sure will recover something.

3. Reset Kodi

Resetting Kodi is much like uninstalling and reinstalling Kodi with the differences that it takes less time. When you reset Kodi, it is restored to the factory defaults. This means that you will lose all your data including addons and settings. Again, if you want to retain some of the data, you may back it up using the Supreme Builds Wizard or Ares Wizard.

You can go to the list of the apps on the device you are using and select Kodi. You will find the option to clear the Kodi data.

If you happen to be a FireStick user, you can reset Kodi by following the steps below:

  • Open Settings from home screen

kodi settings

  • Click Applications

firestick applications

  • Click Manage Installed Applications

manage installed applications

  • Scroll down and click Kodi

select kodi on fire stick

  • Click Clear Data

reset kodi on fire stick

  • Click Clear Data again

clear kodi data on fire stick

4. Clear the Kodi Cache

If Kodi has accumulated a lot of cache that it doesn’t need any longer, it is best to delete it. Cache not only takes up the space on the storage but also causes many Kodi related problems. If Kodi is not working, cache could be the culprit.

There are two ways to delete the cache – from within Kodi using a third-party addon or from the device settings.

I recommend the first method that involves an addon. Actually, it must be a maintenance addon. While there are plenty of them out there, I suggest Ares Wizard or Supreme Builds Wizard. Both these addons have the option to clear the cache from within Kodi.

You may also clear the cache from outside Kodi. How you do it depends on the device on which you are using Kodi. If you have a FireStick device, here is how you can do that:

  • From the home-screen go to Settings
  • Click Applications
  • Click Manage Installed Applications
  • Click Kodi
  • Click Clear Cache

5. Update Kodi

If Kodi is not working, you would want to make sure it is up to date. Most addons and builds are designed for the latest version of Kodi and may not work properly on the older versions. As a result, you may experience unwanted issues. To fix this you need to Update Kodi

Kodi Krypton 17.6 is the last released version of this app at the time of writing this article. To check the version, go to Settings > System information. The version number is displayed on the bottom right. The next version is going to be Kodi 18 Leia. The beta version was released. You can read our guide on How to Install Kodi 18

If you are updating from one major version to another (such as Kodi Jarvis to Kodi Krypton), you may lose all your existing data and addons. However, if it’s a minor update (say Kodi 17.5 to Kodi 17.6), you may be able to retain some or all the data.

6. Remove/Uninstall Kodi Addons

Over a period, you may have installed several addons, many of them you may not use anymore. When you have too many addons, they may start causing problem. Especially, when there are some outdated addons. If Kodi is not working, I would recommend removing some addons that you don’t use. This might help. I suggest you to install Working Kodi Addons only.

To uninstall addons, here is what you can do:

  • Open Kodi and on the home-screen click Add-ons
  • Next, click My Addons

my addons on kodi

  • Click a category (such as Program add-ons or Video add-ons)

video addons on kodi

  • Click the addon you wish to uninstall

select addon to uninstall

  • Click the Uninstall button on the next screen

uninstall kodi addon

7. Update Kodi Addons

Kodi does not always update the addons automatically. Some addons need to be updated manually. Sometimes the outdated addons cause trouble and Kodi wouldn’t work properly unless they have been updated. To update an addon, here are the steps you can follow:

  • Open Kodi and on the home-screen click Add-ons
  • Next, click My Addons
  • Click a category (such as Program add-ons or Video add-ons)
  • Click the addon you wish to update

choose kodi addons

  • Click the Update button on the next screen

If Kodi is not working, there could be many solutions to get it working. A great deal depends upon the specific type of problem you are experiencing. But, usually, you can fix the issues by following one of the troubleshooting solutions we have provided above. One of the best ways to get Kodi working again is to uninstall and reinstall it.
